Our dental hygienists use a variety of instruments during your appointment. These include hand scalers as well as ultrasonic scalers (cavitrons). An ultrasonic scaler is a device with an electrical current that resonates a metal stack which then causes a vibration to the tip. This produces high and low pressure areas or "cavitation". The cavition is bubbles filled with water vapor. The vibration stretches and compresses which makes the bubbles pop causing heat and pressure. This energy loosens tartar buildup and bursts the "biofilm" on your teeth.
Metal hand instruments are wonderful tools to remove tartar buildup, but have little to no impact on bacterial biofilm. Our office believes that by using ultrasonic scalers in addition to hand scalers we can do more to prevent as well as treat periodontal disease. Our best analogy is to think of biofilm like an egg. Crack an egg and put it in a bowl. Stir it around-the egg just swirls around the yoke undisturbed. That is what a hand scaler does to bacteria. The bacteria is in tiny bubbles-invisible to the naked eye. When we scale we bounce these bubbles off of each other. Back to the egg-poke the yoke with a fork and then stir. The yoke is no longer all held together. When we use the cavitron, we implode these bubbles thus destroying the bacteria!
Most of our patients have said they enjoy the ultrasonic scaler because it removes buildup easier and more gently. Less pressure is used on their teeth, and less trauma to their gum tissue. The worst part about the instrument is the high pitched noise. Some patients may find it annoying but this noise is the sound waves doing their job. Some patients find it helpful to bring their ear buds and listen to their favorite music during their appointments.
